Project 3: Sockets and Network
Data Visualization of Depression Forum Posts
My idea deals with how people actually see depression and what they actually feel. Using actual posts of people who describe their feelings and experiences of depression. Depression is a disease of mind.

This sketch just plays with animation and text. The text is from the data site, taking a few posts from the forum and taking key phrases that deal with depression.

This sketch is using lines that correlate with ellipses that can be dragged plus spring action. he text is from the data site, taking a few posts from the forum and taking key phrases that deal with depression. Depression is kind of a spring that always comes back, there's really no cure for it.
Conclusion:
I did not get my sketches to function correctly, so I will see if I can redo this idea in a different way before the end of the semester.

Instagram:
What is Instagram? (As per company FAQ page: https://instagram.com/about/faq/)
Instagram is a fun and quirky way to share your life with friends
through a series of pictures. Snap a photo with your mobile phone, then
choose a filter to transform the image into a memory to keep around
forever. We're building Instagram to allow you to experience moments in
your friends' lives through pictures as they happen. We imagine a world
more connected through photos.____________________________________________________________________

- Digital communication with just text
- Talking through screens rather than face to face
- Talking completely anonymous

- Getting people to just talk and to do so globally
- Inhibits social networking without knowing a face to go with the words

My Main Idea: Intervening with Strangers
I want to explore the idea of talking to a complete stranger and at least getting their name at the end of the conversation. The purpose of this intervention is to focus on making the idea of "stranger" to go away with just a simple name. Stranger by definition is a person whom one does not know or with whom one is not familiar. Obtaining a name, is the most recognizable information that can be obtained. In a name comes an orgin and a past to go with it. For instance, my name is "Arobelle", it comes from four different names, my mother Adora, my father Romy, my grandfather Benjamin, and my grandmother Lilley. Names can be very dynamic, even if it's only the first name. But if there is luck, a last name can only hold more information. For instance, my maiden name is Guevarra, which comes from Spanish orgin (Spain). My grandfather is part spanish and filipino. A summary of Spanish/Filipino history deals alot with the Spanish conquest, including Ferdinand Magellen's expedition to the Philippines to convert the native to Roman Catholic. and Ruy Lopez de Villalobos' expedition, naming the island, "Las Islas Filipinas"(after Philip II of Spain). Just a name can uncover the identity of someone, not entirely, but can uncover the background in which they are named.
In today's society, people are caught up in everyday hassles and events that talking to one another has become so anonymous and we have to result to these online chat engines, to just talk about our problems and issues...yet at the end of most of these conversations, we don't even say "My name is...nice to meet you!". Especially in a digital world where the environment is so anonymous and people forget that behind the screen can be another person. Yes, give or take there are "bots" to ruin the intervention, but perhaps looking at the names of what these bots call themselves could be interesting to research. In the end, I want to give an understanding from experience, that digital or face to face, relationships can be made whether its temporary or forever by simply the exchange of names.
I will intervene and have an actual conversation that starts with "Hello, how are you?" "My name is....what is yours?" (I will only be using my first name for this exercise). The exchange of names will be in the beginning or in the end before the conversation ends or disconnects.
I will be collecting chat logs from those who I talk to and compile a research investigation on the names that I receive during these conversations and I will be finding out who these strangers are, not exactly, but at least know where they're coming from.

Project 1: Objects and Text
Due Wed. 09/16/15
Background:
Objects have the capacity to carry stories, narratives and information. They often are embedded with meanings that may not be accessible or visible. For example, you may have a vase that you cherish, not because of its particular monetary value, but because it was given to you by someone you care about.
Your assignment is to investigate the hidden meaning of familiar objects you have around you and create a hypertext/web-based piece that reveals the complex narratives embedded or related to that object; stories that would be otherwise invisible and inaccessible.
Process:
Chose an object and consider the multitude of meanings it conveys. Write out these stories in as much detail as you chose. Then use maps or flowcharts, either using a computer program or drawing it by hand, to visually represent the various narratives and meanings (or details of one particular story) that pertain to that object.
You will be designing an interactive web site from the mapping you create. Use text, images, hyperlinks and interactive events (e.g. mouseover events, database calls) to construct your hypernarrative.
Applications: Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Scanning, MAMP
Examples:
Pockets Full of Memories, George Legrady
